Your first injection,
in plain English.

Most patients are anxious about this part. Don't be. Subcutaneous injections with insulin syringes are smaller and shallower than the shots most people picture. The whole thing takes under a minute.

Subcutaneous injection technique — the needle enters at 45° and delivers into the fat layer just beneath the skin, well above muscle.

  1. Take the vial out of the fridge

Let it sit for 2–3 minutes to warm slightly. Wipe the rubber top with an alcohol pad.

  2. Draw the dose

Your dosing card tells you exactly how many units. Pull the plunger to that mark, push the needle through the rubber stopper, and pull the dose into the syringe.

  3. Pinch a small fold of skin

Belly fat, about two inches from your belly button. Wipe with an alcohol pad and let it dry for a moment.

  4. Insert the needle at 45°

Quick, confident motion. The needle is small — the skin barely registers it. Push the plunger slowly and steadily.

  5. Pull out, dispose, done

Drop the syringe in your sharps pouch. Total time: under 30 seconds once you have done it once.

Common questions

Still wondering?

Under a minute, start to finish. Most of that is letting the vial warm and letting the alcohol dry — the injection itself is a few seconds.
No — rotate the site. Pick a different spot on the fold each time rather than going back to the same point.
Common and not a cause for concern. Apply light pressure with a clean pad; do not rub the site.
It goes straight into a sharps container. Never into household rubbish, and never re-capped by hand.
Anticipation is almost always worse than the injection. Have everything laid out before you start so there is nothing to work out mid-way.
